"Mother Agency"
Some agents may ask you to sign an agreement that makes them your mother agency.

A mother agency serves as your primary or "home" agency. They exist to get you started, guide your career, and support you in the industry. Your mother agent will also assist in placing you with agencies throughout the world.

In return for this guidance, your mother agency will ask any agency they place you with for a commission on your bookings. For instance, if your mother agency is in Miami and you are placed by them with an agency in New York, your Miami agency will receive half of the commission your New York agency collects from your bookings.

Finding agents in other markets

One of the most unfortunate mistakes an aspiring model can make is focusing only on large agencies in large cities. Give your local agency a shot. Chances are, they market their models to those big agencies and that is your best chance at getting noticed. In addition, by ignoring local agencies, you may be missing a great opportunity to get the experience and tears you need to join a larger agency.

Keep in mind that unless you live near a larger market like NYC or LA you will probably have to move. This means being financially and emotionally ready to leave your home town for a new city. Though modeling can be lucrative, most models have to take a flexible "day job" in order to eat and pay the rent. Plus-size models typically work less than regular models and making ends meet can be tough. Agencies will not pay for moving expenses, apartments, or relocation costs. However, if you won't be satisfied until you make it big in the big city, then go for it!
